The current worldwide market for drugs treating CNS diseases is in excess of $70 billion. Psychiatric diseases
account for greater than half of the total worldwide CNS market, despite significant unmet medical need.
Therefore the development of new drugs with improved efficacy and reduced side effects will be welcomed in the
market place. Galenea intends to pursue these opportunities through partnerships as well as through the
development of its own CNS pipeline.
Galenea is currently pursuing the discovery of new drugs to treat schizophrenia by developing small molecule
modulators of the calcineurin pathway. We believe this program will yield a novel treatment for schizophrenia
characterized by:
- Improved cognitive function
- Improved effects on negative symptoms
- Reduced side effects
At its inception, Galenea also focused on developing technologies that utilize RNA interference (RNAi) to
treat respiratory disease, with influenza as the initial target. In 2006, Galenea made a strategic decision
to concentrate exclusively on CNS diseases. The company completed a successful sale of the RNAi/Influenza
assets in a deal that includes significant milestones and royalties for Galenea. The value created by this
program will enable Galenea to substantially develop other CNS programs. Galenea is actively seeking additional
opportunities in the CNS area.
